How Do You Really Get Firmer Skin?

Ever swooned at skincare TV commercials when there’s a typical close-up of the model’s supple skin “bouncing back” in slow motion? Quick cut back to reality. If some of you think that the days of having bouncy and firm skin is kind of over, you’re not alone.

The lowdown on firm skin

Let’s face it. We stop making collagen and elastin which give youthful skin that much desired “bounce” at around puberty.

Regardless of whether signs of aging are immediately observable or not, that technically means that the skin could be on a downward spiral in terms of elasticity, suppleness, hydration and everything related to firm, youthful skin as soon as we hit late teens.

Moreover, there are other factors that come into play when it comes to aging skin: environmental pollutants, long hours of work we put in, skin-unfriendly lifestyle habits (such as smoking and not wearing sunscreen often enough) and emotional stress.

Seems like firm skin is a distant memory, isn’t it?

“While aging is part of life, dull, saggy skin doesn’t have to be. With the right skincare products and healthy lifestyle habits, we can give the skin the appearance of being lifted, supple and radiant.”

How to make skin feel lifted and firmer

1) Wear sunscreen

Sun damage is considered one of the primary reasons for the loss of elasticity in skin. Strangely, this seems to be one of the most often-repeated skincare advice that fall on deaf ears.

When we live in a tropical country like Singapore where the sun blazes for 365 days a year, sunscreen should be a must-have in every discerning woman’s skincare routine. A broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 and above not only helps to minimize the risk of skin cancer, now you also know that there’s the added benefit of putting back the spring into the skin.

Besides the face, don’t forget to give the neck, chest and hands the skin-protecting goodness of sunscreen too!

Recommendation #1: RESIST Super-light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30

What is it: A lightly tinted and mineral-based, this anti-aging moisturizer rated SPF 30 is more than just a sunscreen. It’s a multi-functional skincare addition which people with oil and combination skin will want to have.

Besides shielding the skin from sun damage, it’s also packed with skin-supporting antioxidants that minimizes enlarged pores and wrinkles.

RESIST Super-light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 is great for combination, oily and sensitive skin. If you can see signs of aging such as visibly enlarged pores and excess oil, it’ll work for you too.

How to use: Apply RESIST Super-light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 as the last step in your day skincare routine before you step out of the house. If you swim or sweat profusely, it’s good to reapply every two hours. With its lightly tinted blend, you can delight in a silky, matte look every time.

2) Wear sunglasses

Your skin gets the protection of sunscreen. Don’t forget about the fragile skin around your eyes too.

While you may choose to apply a mild sunscreen around your eyes, give the windows to your soul double protection by wearing sunnies. You can flaunt your distinctive style too!

3) Use skincare products with retinol and niacinamide

Retinol (a form of vitamin A) and niacinamide (vitamin B3) are potent skin-supporting antioxidants that can enhance almost every aspect of your skin with regular use. Besides restoring the bounce and firmness in skin, these dynamic duo can also specifically target a range of skincare concerns – from fine lines, wrinkles to enlarged pores.

* Note: antioxidants such as retinol and niacinamide are delicate and can deteriorate easily if exposed to light and air. Hence, it’s crucial that you choose retinol and niacinamide skincare products that come in air-tight squeezie tubes or pump bottles that minimize light and air contact. Products in little pots and jars are not ideal as they are exposed to air and light (and your fingers) too readily.

Recommendation #2: RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum

What is it: Formulated in an easy-to-absorbed silky smooth serum, this delivers skin-nourishing retinol, a blend of vitamin-derived antioxidants and anti-aging plant extracts into your skin. Your skin gets the supple boost it needs while improving a range of other skincare concerns such as uneven skin tone and fine lines.

Who is it for: RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum is suitable for all skin types and anyone who wants to specifically target emerging wrinkles, uneven skin tone and losing skin elasticity. RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum is suitable for all skin types and anyone who wants to specifically target emerging wrinkles, uneven skin tone and losing skin elasticity.

How to use: The retinol serum is best applied after cleansing, toning and exfoliating. To let the serum get to work as efficiently as possible, use this first before applying your regular moisturizer and any other skincare products that you may be using. Then followed up with a sunscreen of SPF 30 and greater before you head out during the day.

Recommendation #3: RESIST 10% Niacinamide Booster

What is it: This is a booster that can uplift sagging skin and give it the appearance of plump, supple radiance. The first 10% concentration niacinamide formula that comes with a proprietary blend of hydrating ingredients to target frustrating skincare issues such as enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, redness and dryness as well, it’s also 100% fragrance free and clinically proven to be non-irritating.

Who is it for: RESIST 10% Niacinamide Booster is a multi-tasking skincare powerhouse that people with multiple skincare concerns will find very helpful.

How to use: Apply RESIST 10% Niacinamide Booster first thing after cleansing, toning and exfoliating as this will give it optimal time for it to be absorbed into the skin. You may also blend the booster into your regular moisturizer or serum to use.

4) Use a gentle, leave-on BHA or AHA exfoliant

Gentle exfoliants like BHA (salicylic acid) and AHA (glycolic acid) will gently remove dead skin cells which greatly enhances the delivery and absorption of skincare products to recover the skin’s elasticity. You don’t need to use both BHA and AHA at the same time though. You may choose to use one or alternate them on every other day.

Recommendation #4: RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA

What is it: With a blend of skin-nourishing antioxidants, this leave-on exfoliant gently refines the surface of the skin to reveal smoother skin overnight.

Who is it for: RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA is suitable for people with normal to dry skin with visible signs of aging. Besides using it on the face, you may also apply the gentle exfoliant to the neck and chest.

How to use: Use RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA once a week instead of your regular exfoliant. After cleansing and toning, apply a small amount on the face, avoiding the areas around the eyes and lips. You may rinse off after 10 minutes or leave it on overnight. Please ensure that you do not use your regular exfoliant with this AHA exfoliant at the same time. As your skin may become a little more sensitive to the sun after using AHA exfoliant, avoid exposing yourself to direct sunlight the day after using it.

5) Don’t smoke

The toxins and chemicals in cigarettes are some of the most lethal poisons that zap your health as well as the collagen, elastin and moisture in your skin. Moreover, smoking decreases the levels of estrogen, the hormone which can keep the skin firm and supple. So if you put out that ciggy, you’d not only be saving your own skin (literally), you can be saving your health and money too.

6) Minimize sugar intake

This means curbing your craving for that chocolate bar, soft drinks and those oh-so-delectable desserts. Experts believe that excessive sugar intake creates harmful molecules in the blood called Advanced Glycation End (AGE) products that weaken collagen and elastin, the skin’s building blocks that keep it firm and supple.

7) Relax the neck

We’re sure many of us are guilty of this one unintentionally. Straining the neck muscles will eventually exert a pulling down effect on the face, quite contrary to the uplifting effect we’re trying to achieve. So the next time you’re working out in the gym, jogging or carrying heavy groceries, try to relax your neck as much as possible.

Maintaining a firm, supple complexion requires some effort. However, all that using the right skin-lifting products and consciously cultivating good lifestyle habits will become second nature if we do it often enough. Besides, can anything else beat the pleasure of feeling the smoothness of firm, bouncy skin on yourself?
