Usually, when something is a combination, it brings us convenience or better results. However, when you have combination skin, it takes care, understanding and a careful selection of skincare products to bring balance back into your skin.

What is combination skin?

Combination skin means that you have some dry as well as oily patches on your face. For most people with combination skin, the oily patches occur on the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) and the dry patches are on the cheeks.

What causes combination skin

Just why some people have combination skin is a mystery, probably it’s inherited. However, using harsh skincare products will also eventually dry out some parts of your face while stimulating excess oil production in other areas that are already oily.

If you choose the right skincare products for combination skin, its condition will improve. The dry areas will soften while the oily areas will be less oily and less pores will be visible.

Which skincare products are suitable for combination skin

Since there are both dry and oily areas on the face, you should also use specific skincare products for different parts of the face.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, a general rule of thumb is to layer your skincare products. That means to use a more heavy-duty moisturizer/serum/booster on the dry areas.

For the oily areas of the face, use an oil absorbing, mattifying product or a light gel/lotion.

The thing about caring for combination skin is to keep your skincare products separate and only apply certain products to certain parts of the face. If you think this sounds like a hassle, you’d be thankful to yourself for making the effort to keep your skincare product separate.

No matter what skincare products you choose to layer on parts of the face, one important thing to bear in mind is that none of the products should contain harsh, aggravating ingredients.

No sensitizing products that contain alcohol, peppermint or natural/artificial fragrances should be used on any type of skin. If these drying ingredients are used on combination skin, the dry parts of the face could become drier, while the oily parts of the face would be stimulated to produce more oil and become oilier.

Definitely not the most comfortable feeling.

What skincare products to use on combination skin

Here are some quality skincare products that could help you manage combination skin.

Best cleanser for combination skin

Skin Balancing Oil-Reducing Cleanser

This contains a blend of gentle cleansing ingredients. It thoroughly clears up makeup and impurities, removes excess oil while not stripping away the skin’s natural oil and aggravating the dry patches of combination skin. This is a concentrated cream-to-foam formula that leaves a soft, comfortable feeling on the face. Use this facial cleanser as the first step in your day and night skincare routine.

Best toner for combination skin

Resist Weightless Advanced Repairing Toner

This lightweight toner contains skin-renewing niacinamide and peptide complex that reduce signs of aging, gently moisturize and protect the skin against environmental stressors such as pollution, dust and dirt. This is a soothing and gentle toner that brings back balance into combination skin. Use twice daily after cleansing the skin.

Best moisturizer for combination skin

Skin Balancing Invisible Finish Moisture Gel

A lightweight gel that provides essential hydration for combination skin without clogging the pores and triggering pimples. It leaves your skin comfortably refreshed, minimizes the appearance of pores and fights environmental stressors. Apply this moisture gel to combination skin as the last step in your night skincare routine.

Good lifestyle habits to manage combination skin

Besides avoiding skincare products with harsh ingredients, and choosing the right products, there are also several lifestyle habits that could manage combination skin.

Moisturize from inside out: while it’s a no-brainer to be applying the right moisturizer without clogging the pores and triggering breakouts on combination skin, don’t forget to moisturize from the inside too. You may choose to eat more food rich in essential fatty acids such as fish oil, salmon, flaxseeds or walnuts.

Move that body: exercising gets the blood pumping which helps to circulate important nutrients all over the body, including the skin.

Reduce stress: stress could be an insidious enemy for the skin and cause combination skin to act up more often. To reduce stress, tune in to your favourite de-stressing methods, be it meditation, yoga or listening to music.

Avoid pore-clogging skincare products: when you’re shopping for skincare products for combination skin, always choose those that are specially formulated for combination skin since they would contain the right balance of skin nutrients. Avoid cloying skincare and makeup products such as those that contain mineral oils or petroleum-based products since they’re likely to clog pores which may lead to outbreaks.

Go fragrance-free: be it natural or artificial fragrances, they’re likely to dry out the dry patches and aggravate the oily patches of combination skin, leading to irritation and redness.

Remember the sunscreen: for combination skin, look for a sunscreen that’s light on the skin which doesn’t burden your skin while offering protection from the sun.

With a little patience and care in choosing the right skincare products, you can bring the balance back into your combination skin.
